Евгений Вучетич в первые дни Великой Отечественной войны ушел добровольцем на фронт в качестве рядового солдата-пулеметчика. В 1943 году был контужен, откомиссован обратно в Москву и стал работать в Студии военных художников им. М.Б. Грекова, где окончательно сформировался как скульптор.

В 1945–1949 годах совместно с архитектором Я. Белопольским Вучетич создал один из первых монументальных комплексов, посвященных победе в войне, – памятник воинам Советской армии, павшим в боях с фашизмом, установленный в Трептов-парке в Берлине. Образ солдата-победителя, несущего на руках ребенка и попирающего фашистскую свастику, – уменьшенная модель центральной фигуры памятника. В 1950 году за эту работу скульптору была присуждена Сталинская премия.

Вучетич прославляет не воинскую доблесть, а гуманизм, бесценный на полях войны. Идеей для создания памятника послужила реальная история: 26 апреля 1945 года сержант Николай Масалов во время штурма Берлина вынес из-под обстрела немецкую девочку. Позднее он так описывал это событие: «Под мостом я увидел трехлетнюю девочку, сидевшую возле убитой матери. У малышки были светлые, чуть курчавившиеся у лба волосы. Она все теребила мать за поясок и звала: “Муттер, муттер!”» Хотя солдат получил ранение в ногу, он смог вынести плачущую девочку из-под обстрела в безопасное место. Прототипом воина-освободителя стал Николай Масалов, но позировал скульптору другой солдат – Иван Одарченко из Тамбова, служивший в Берлинской комендатуре.

  1. 1946

    Leads the Treptower Park project

    He is appointed to lead the large project of a memorial ensemble to the soldiers of the Soviet Army in Berlin’s Treptower Park (1946–1949, together with the architect Ya. B. Belopolsky); in the authors’ conception the monument is to embody the high nobility of the Soviet people’s liberating mission in the Second World War.

  2. 1946

    Order of the Patriotic War and his first Stalin Prize

    On 6 August 1946, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Intendant Service Captain E. V. Vuchetich is awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class; the same year he receives a Stalin Prize of the second degree for the sculptural portrait of Army General I. D. Chernyakhovsky (1945).

  3. 1947

    Stalin Prize for the Efremov monument

    He receives a Stalin Prize of the first degree for the monument to Lieutenant General M. G. Efremov in Vyazma, Smolensk Oblast (1946).

  4. October 1948

    Chief sculptor of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition

    In October 1948 he is appointed chief sculptor of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition.

  5. 1950

    Stalin Prize for the Berlin monument and the relief

    He receives a Stalin Prize of the first degree for the monument to the soldiers of the Soviet Army in Berlin and the high relief We Swear to You, Comrade Lenin!

  6. 1953

    Full member of the USSR Academy of Arts

    In 1953 he becomes a full member (academician) of the USSR Academy of Arts, having been a corresponding member since 1947.
