Landschap met Maria, die met het Christuskind in de armen, op de ezel rijdt. Jozef leidt het dier aan de teugels. Ze worden begeleidt door engeltjes die een os meevoeren. Het gezelschap rijdt langs een heidens beeld dat prompt in stukken uiteen valt. In de marge een tweeregelig onderschrift, in twee kolommen, in het Latijn.

  1. 3 December 1616

    Apprenticeship with Osias Beert

    On December 3, 1616, in Antwerp, he was apprenticed to the painter and still-life master Osias Beert.

  2. c. 1620s

    Training in Engraving with Lucas Vorsterman

    He worked under the renowned engraver Lucas Vorsterman, from whom he learned the art of engraving.

  3. 1624

    Chief Engraver of Rubens's Workshop

    After Vorsterman's quarrel with Rubens in 1624, Pontius took his place and for several years was the workshop's principal engraver, reproducing the master's drawings and paintings.

  4. 1624–1631

    Living in Rubens's House

    From 1624 to 1631 Pontius lived in Rubens's house.

  5. after 1640

    Work After Van Dyck, Jordaens, and Others Following Rubens's Death

    After Rubens's death in 1640 he produced numerous reproductive engravings after originals by Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, Seghers, de Crayer, Titian, and Velázquez; in all he executed 42 plates after Rubens.
