  1. 1899

    Second Journey to the Middle East

    In 1899 Polenov traveled to the Middle East for the second time to gather material for his grand Gospel series From the Life of Christ.

  2. January 1905

    Resignation from the Academy of Arts in Protest

    Because of the role of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, president of the Academy, in the events of Bloody Sunday in January 1905, Polenov and Valentin Serov resigned from the Academy of Arts.

  3. 1915

    People's House in Tarusa and the Polenov House

    In 1915 Polenov organized the People's House in Tarusa, opened with a production of his opera The Phantoms of Hellas; in December 1915 the "Polenov House" was ceremonially opened in Moscow — the world's first institution for assisting village and factory theaters, founded by Polenov with Savva Mamontov.

  4. 1924

    First Solo Exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery

    In 1924 Polenov's first solo exhibition was held at the State Tretyakov Gallery, dedicated to the artist's 80th birthday.
