About the work

Meanwhile, in the life of Ferdinand Bol

The whole life
  1. after 1635

    Apprenticed in Rembrandt's workshop

After December 1635, when Bol is still recorded in Dordrecht as a painter, he works as an apprentice in Rembrandt's Amsterdam workshop (other accounts say already after 1630) and lives in his house. He followed his master so closely that many of his paintings were long attributed to Rembrandt himself, and Rembrandt even sold his pupil's work.

  6. 1641

Death of his father, Balthasar Bol

Balthasar Bol, chief surgeon of Dordrecht, dies; Rembrandt had painted his portrait when he came to Amsterdam to visit his son.
