Двухчастная сюита – «Утро в Париже» и «Вечер в Париже» – рисует район, многократно запечатленный художником в период с 1893 по 1912 гг. Здесь, вблизи бульваров Клиши и Батиньоль, находилась его мастерская. Заказывая Боннару две картины «из парижской жизни», И. А. Морозов предоставил художнику полную свободу выбора сюжетов. Основные жанрово-иконографические параметры будущей живописной сюиты можно найти в серии цветных литографий «Несколько аспектов парижской жизни», которые Боннар выполнил в 1898 году по заказу Амбруаза Воллара. Многие фигуры оттуда переместятся на картины – дети, женщины, маленькая собака, повозка – часть пейзажного фона картин повторяется в точности от холста к холсту. Перекресток бульвара Батиньоль Боннар ранее дважды изображал в картинах «Тележка» (1909, Фонд Барнса, Филадельфия) и «Тряпичники» (нач. 1910, собр. Солц, Нью-Йорк, D. 640).

Мотив молодых женщин, спешащих на работу и двигающихся прямо на зрителя, торговка устрицами, и повозка угольщика прямо в центре композиции – это точное, буквально до четверти часа, обозначение времени действия. Еще несколько минут и ситуация на улице изменится, появятся другие персонажи, так как дело этих уже будет сделано, товар распродан, уголь доставлен, а стайка девушек скроется из виду. Основные детали выглядят как легко узнаваемые паттерны для привычного глаза, разглядывать их в подробностях нет никакого смысла, сюжетом картины является само утро, а действующие лица лишь обозначают его. Акцентируя формальные изобразительные свойства живописи, Боннар уходил в сторону от тех путей, по которым в изображении площадей и перекрестков Парижа уже прошли его предшественники – импрессионисты Моне, Ренуар, Писсарро и Гюстав Кайботт. Ему чужды социальная тенденциозность и фотографизм Жюля Адлера. Однако, пользуясь в каком-то смысле приемами этих художников, Боннар полемизировал с ними и, кроме прочего, настаивал именно на декоративности своих работ. Автор аннотации: А. Г. Костеневич

    Visiting Manguin in Saint-Tropez

    In June 1909 Bonnard stayed with the painter Manguin at the Villa Demière in Saint-Tropez; View of Saint-Tropez, or The Alley, painted there, later formed the basis of the central panel of the Morozov triptych.

  2. January 1910

    Morozov's Commission for the Mediterranean Triptych

    In January 1910 Ivan Morozov, through the Bernheim-Jeune gallery, commissioned from Bonnard a large triptych for the staircase of his Moscow mansion on Prechistenka Street.

  3. March 1910

    Solo Exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune

    At Bonnard's solo exhibition at the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in March 1910, Train and Barges was shown for the first time, attracting the attention of Guillaume Apollinaire.

  4. September 1910

    Trip to Saint-Tropez to Visit Paul Simon

    In September 1910 Bonnard stayed in Saint-Tropez at the invitation of Paul Simon and wrote to his mother that the south had struck him like a scene from the Thousand and One Nights; he returned there in March 1911.
