    Childhood in Lexington in a baseball family

    Twombly’s father, also nicknamed “Cy”, pitched for the Chicago White Sox; father and son were both nicknamed after the baseball great Cy Young. Twombly graduates from Lexington High School in Virginia in 1946.

    Meets Robert Rauschenberg

    On a tuition scholarship at the Art Students League of New York, Twombly meets Robert Rauschenberg, with whom he is briefly romantically involved. Rauschenberg encourages him to attend Black Mountain College.
