This is a terracotta bust made in the late 18th century in Germany. The bust represents the portrait of a man wearing a flat cap, doublet of figured damask, and a robe bordered with fur.
This was originally thought to be an Augsburg bust of the early 16th century, similar to the type painted by Dürer and Lucas Cranach. However, doubts were expressed about its authenticity, and a thermoluminescent test indicated a firing date of about 1780. Probably not inteded to deceive, the bust has been tentatively identified as a historicising portrait of the late 18th century.
