Having won the right to compete for the large gold medal, Perov moved to St Petersburg.

In the autumn of 1862 Perov married Elena Edmondovna Sheins.

Leaves abroad as an Academy pensioner
In December 1862 Perov and his wife left for abroad, he as a pensioner of the Academy of Arts: via Berlin, Dresden and Düsseldorf he reached Paris.

Paris: scenes of European street life
In Paris Perov painted scenes of European street life: “The Vendor of Statuettes”, “The Savoyard”, “The Organ-Grinder”, “Beggars on the Boulevard”, “Musicians and Bystanders”, “The Ragpickers”.

Returns to Moscow ahead of schedule
Having received the Academy's permission to return early and continue his pensionership in Russia, Perov came back to Moscow, where the rest of his life was spent, and settled in the house of his wife's uncle, F. F. Rezanov.
