These boat drawings, in pen and ink over pencil, were made by Chinnery during his long residence in Macau from 1825 until his death in 1852. On the left a single boat has its mast raised but its sail lowered, seeming to rest on the boat's thatched awning; the drawing is dated April 9th 1839. On the right (at 90°) three adjacent Tanka boats are steered by boatwomen with long poles; this drawing is dated 8 April 1839.
