Картина отражает модное в XIX веке увлечение восточной культурой и бытом, которое породило в Европе особый стиль под названием «ориентализм». В этот период во многих дворянских домах появились турецкие уголки и курительные комнаты, предметом домашнего обихода сделался восточный халат. Распространенным аксессуаром костюма стал чубук у мужчин и чалма у женщин, показателем разносторонней образованности служило знание восточных языков.

К.П. Брюллов написал «Турчанку» в Петербурге по впечатлениям от экспедиции на Ионические острова и в Малую Азию, которая была организована известным меценатом и писателем графом В.П. Орловым-Давыдовым. За время путешествия художник более трех месяцев провел в Турции, где напитался восточной экзотикой: яркие краски, чувственная нега и царственный покой.

В своем творчестве Брюллов неоднократно обращался к теме Востока. Особенно много он работал в графике, создал иллюстрации к романтическим поэмам А.С. Пушкина «Бахчисарайский фонтан», «Ангел и Пери» В.А. Жуковского. Художника привлекала жизнь Востока и загадочный образ восточной женщины.

На картине изображена соблазнительная дева, которая томно возлежит на высоких подушках. Драгоценная бархатная накидка оттеняет ее пряную восточную красоту: широкие брови, карие глаза, густые темные волосы, чувственные губы. Выразительное лицо юной и очаровательной красавицы обрамляет золотая, расшитая цветными узорами чалма. Длинная бахрома головного убора кистями спадает на грудь девушки, едва прикрытую полупрозрачным белым платьем. Ее мягкий взгляд устремлен вдаль. Он словно отражает полет ее сладких мечтаний и романтических грез. А пылающий алый фон дополняет возвышенную эмоциональную тональность картины.

Жизнь восточной женщины была скрыта от посторонних глаз. Мужчины, не имеющие отношения к гарему, не могли видеть интимные подробности ее бытия. Поэтому картина является плодом воображения художника и представляет собой фантазию на экзотическую тему Востока.

Полотно неоднократно копировалась. Известны аналогичные по сюжету картины И.И. Липина и Ф.О. Будкина. Произведение происходит из собрания Ф.П. Прянишникова, известного коллекционера.

  1. 1835

    The emperor’s order: return and become a professor

    In Constantinople the artist found a new order from the emperor to come to St Petersburg at once and take up a professorship at the Imperial Academy of Arts.

  2. 1835–1836

    Meets Alexander Pushkin

    At one of the Moscow receptions held in his honour Bryullov met Alexander Pushkin.

  3. 1836

    Professor at the Academy and head of the history class

    On his return to St Petersburg Bryullov was given the rank of junior (second-degree) professor and put in charge of the Academy’s history class (he taught until 1849); he was asked to paint a large picture on a theme from Russian history in order to earn the rank of senior professor.

  4. 1837

    Zhukovsky’s portrait to buy out Shevchenko

    Zhukovsky asked Bryullov to paint his portrait for the imperial family so that the proceeds could buy Taras Shevchenko out of serfdom; Bryullov gladly agreed, and with the help of Count M. Yu. Vielgorsky the portrait was raffled in a court lottery that raised 2,500 roubles.

  5. 22 April 1838

    Taras Shevchenko is freed

    On 22 April 1838 Shevchenko, bought out with the lottery money, received his freedom and entered the Academy of Arts, later becoming one of Bryullov’s favourite pupils.

  6. 27 January 1839

    Marries Emilia Timm and parts from her a month later

    A month after the wedding the couple parted for good: Emilia went with her parents to Riga. The reason for the break remained unknown to St Petersburg society, which blamed the husband for everything.
