NKVD burns portraits of “enemies of the people”

In early 1937 the Armenian NKVD decides to remove from museums and burn 12 portraits of “enemies of the people” — prominent public figures and intellectuals painted by Saryan: 11 works are destroyed, the twelfth vanishes. The “Portrait of the Poet Yeghishe Charents” is saved by museum staff, who hide it at risk to their lives; other accounts say it survived because it was held in a different museum.
