About the work

This is one of a number of original drawings by Luke Clennell, illustrating the works of Tobias Smollett, Laurence Sterne and perhaps other writers too. The drawings are bound in a volume that contains many of Clennell's illustrations for British Novelists, a series of prints published by Sherwood, Neely, and Jones in 1810-11.

A note on the back of the drawing suggests that the scene is from Sterne's Tristram Shandy. However, it seems more likely to be an illustration for one of Smollett's novels, such as The Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves.
