In the life of Louis I. Kahn
The whole life1950
Architect-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome
The stay in Rome and visits to the ruins of ancient buildings in Italy, Greece and Egypt marked a turning point: Kahn, who had worked in a fairly orthodox International Style, went back to basics and developed a style of his own. The residency and travels are placed in the 1950s; in the terse sketches of those years he sought architecture's archetypes.
1953
