    Born

    Family moves to Saint Petersburg

    Two years later the family moves to Saint Petersburg: his father wants to set up a factory there with money his mother received as an inheritance. It is here that Andreas takes his first drawing lessons. Other accounts say he came to Saint Petersburg with his father only in 1828.

    Düsseldorf

  4. 1827

    Takes up his studies in earnest in Düsseldorf

    He begins his artistic education in earnest at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, studying with Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow and Heinrich Christoph Kolbe. Other accounts say he moved to Düsseldorf only after two years of study at the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, which he entered in 1832 and where he was considered a mediocre student.

  5. 1831

    Takes part in an exhibition and sells a painting

    At only sixteen he takes part in a local exhibition and sells one painting.

  6. 1836

    Success at the Cologne exhibition

    He achieves success at an exhibition in Cologne, where one of his paintings is bought by Prince Frederick, Governor of the Rhine Province.
