About the sculpture

Thomas Wheeler, an apothecary and botanist is shown in profile facing to the left, as an elderly man with short waving hair and slight side whiskers. He wears a coat with a double collar but no side lapels.

Wheeler gained the freedom of the Society of Apothecaries in 1775 and served as Master of the Society between 1823-4. He was a devotee of the Linnean system of Botany and took part in botanical excursions until the age of eighty.
