Volunteers for the army, rejected for his age
When the First World War broke out Vallotton volunteered for the army but, at forty-eight, was turned down; he helped the war effort as best he could.
June 1917
Three weeks at the front
The Ministry of Fine Arts sent Vallotton with two other artists on a three-week tour of the front line. From his sketches he painted a series of pictures, among them “The Church of Souain in Silhouette”, recording the ruined landscape with cool detachment; the works were shown at the Musée du Luxembourg.

Winters in Cagnes-sur-Mer, summers in Honfleur
After the war Vallotton concentrated on still lifes, “composite landscapes” built in the studio from memory and imagination, and frankly erotic nudes. Dogged by ill health, he and his wife spent their winters at Cagnes-sur-Mer in Provence, where they bought a small house, and their summers at their house in Honfleur.
