About the painting

Pierre Lacaze (1816-1884) was born in Freiburg. He became a pupil of Ary Scheffer in Paris between 1840 and 1845 but mainly produced landscape and genre paintings.

This painting is a fine example of the little known oeuvre of Pierre Lacaze, a genre and landscape painter. This work can be interpreted as a stock character portrait: it shows a young pupil doing his homework with some manifest reluctance. This type of naïve pictures was quite popular during the 19th century and close to the Biedermeier imagery.
