About the work
Guérin found the lithographic crayon to be perfect for rendering the clarity of sculptural form. He used a combination of subtle hatching, smooth contour lines, and shading to represent a young Greek artist surprised by an inspirational visit from a winged female as he works late into the night.

Appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts
On 27 November 1816 Guérin was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, succeeding Claude Dejoux; after the painter’s death in 1833 he was succeeded by Paul Delaroche.
