Departure from Paris Because of the War
The outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 forced Bonnard to leave Paris for the south of France, where he remained until the end of the war.
1940s
Refusal to Paint Pétain's Portrait
During the German occupation Bonnard refused to paint an official portrait of the collaborationist Marshal Pétain, but accepted a commission for a religious painting of Saint Francis de Sales, to whom he gave the face of his late friend Vuillard.
