About the work
Pen and ink illustration created for publication in a newspaper/illustrated magazine, probably The Penny Illustrated Paper. It shows a selection of scenes from a production of The Swineherd and the Princess at the Royalty Theatre, with the singer and dancer Miss Phyllis Broughton (1862-1926) as the Princess, the singer and actress, Miss Decima Moore (Later Lady Moore-Guggisberg, 1871–1964), as the Swineherd and Mr. Hertz as the King. The illustration is not signed but the production took place in circa 1901.
This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
