Shares a Room with Rimbaud
He befriended the poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud; from January to March 1872 he lived with Rimbaud in a room Verlaine rented on the rue Campagne-Première. At the time the artist was ironically nicknamed Gavroche.
1879–1886
Participation in the Impressionist Exhibitions
A follower and protégé of Degas, he took part in four of the eight Impressionist exhibitions — in 1879, 1880, 1881, and 1886, beginning with the fourth independent exhibition.

Forain's first solo show was held at the gallery of Theo van Gogh.
