Meanwhile, in the life of Frederic Remington

The whole life
  1. 1905

Collier’s devotes an entire issue to him

In 1905 Remington scores a major publicity coup when Collier’s devotes an entire issue to him, showcasing his latest works.

  2. 1905

Commission for a “Cowboy” in Fairmount Park

That same year the president of the Fairmount Park Art Association (now the Association for Public Art) commissions Remington to create a large sculpture of a cowboy for Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park.

  3. 1905

The novel “The Way of an Indian” appears in Cosmopolitan

The Way of an Indian, written in 1900 for a Hearst publication, is published in Cosmopolitan only five years later.

  4. 1907–1908

The panic of 1907 and the vogue for fantasy artists

The financial panic of 1907 slows his sales, and in 1908 fantasy artists such as Maxfield Parrish become popular with the public and with commercial sponsors.

  5. 26 December 1909

    Dies after an emergency appendectomy

Remington dies after an emergency appendectomy leads to peritonitis. His extreme obesity — nearly 300 lbs, about 136 kg — had complicated the anesthesia and the surgery, and the postmortem examination cited chronic appendicitis as an underlying factor in his death.
