    Leaves his post to become a free artist

    In 1898, at the age of thirty-one, Nolde left his post as a drawing teacher at the school of the Museum of Industrial and Applied Arts in St Gallen, where he had worked since 1892, to pursue at last his dream of becoming an independent artist.

  3. 1898

    The Munich Academy rejects him

    In 1898 the Munich Academy of Fine Arts rejected him; for the next three years he took private painting lessons, visited Paris and became familiar with contemporary Impressionism.
