About the work

In the museum's own words — in Dutch

Theaterpubliek, met op de voorgrond de hoofden van drie muzikanten uit het orkest. Achter hen een hek met daarachter het lachende publiek verspreid over drie rijen. Boven hen een balkon of loge met twee mannen en twee vrouwen, waarvan de linker een sinaasappelverkoopster is. Een staande vrouw in het publiek trekt aan de jas van de heer in de loge om een mand met sinaasappels aan te bieden. De eerste druk was ontworpen en gegraveerd door William Hogarth en verscheen in 1733. Deze ingekleurde prent met onderschrift is een latere druk uit ca. 1761.
