The war shrinks the market for gift books
The Golden Age of British book illustration rested on a strong market for high-quality illustrated books, typically given as Christmas gifts; many of Rackham's appeared as de luxe limited editions, often vellum-bound and usually signed. The outbreak of war in 1914 curtailed that market, and in the 1920s the public's taste for fantasy and fairies declined as well.
