About the sculpture
Artist Sarah Raphael (1960-2001) was commissioned by the New Millennium Experience Company to create a sculptural piece for the Art at the Dome and the North Meadow Sculpture Project, part of a large exhibition in 2000 at the Millennium Dome. Raphael was known mainly for her paintings and the Childhood Cube is her only known public sculpture.
It is a large steel grid divided into 216 12x12 inch boxes. Raphael, drawing on the language of dolls’ houses and with the assistance of over 60 children from several London schools, filled the Cube with more than 100 imaginative scenes. A fibre optic lighting system also spreads throughout, which colourfully illuminates the scenes.
