The panic of 1907 and the vogue for fantasy artists
The financial panic of 1907 slows his sales, and in 1908 fantasy artists such as Maxfield Parrish become popular with the public and with commercial sponsors.
1908–1909
A turn to Impressionism under the influence of The Ten
In his final two years, under the influence of The Ten, Remington veers more heavily to Impressionism. He regrets that, with his declining health, he is studio-bound and cannot follow his peers, who paint en plein air.

Dies after an emergency appendectomy
Remington dies after an emergency appendectomy leads to peritonitis. His extreme obesity — nearly 300 lbs, about 136 kg — had complicated the anesthesia and the surgery, and the postmortem examination cited chronic appendicitis as an underlying factor in his death.
