The whole life
  1. 1960–1964

    Portraits of Renoir, Breton, Barthes and Chanel

    In 1960–1964 he photographed Jean Renoir (1960), André Breton (1961), Roland Barthes (1963) and Coco Chanel (1964).

  2. 1965–1967

    A second retrospective: Tokyo, Paris, New York, London

    In 1965–1967 his second retrospective was shown in Tokyo, at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris, and in New York, London, Amsterdam, Rome, Zurich, Cologne and other cities.

  3. 1966

    He steps back from Magnum for portraits and landscapes

    In 1966 he withdrew as a principal of Magnum (which still distributes his photographs) to concentrate on portraiture and landscapes; he settled in the mountains of Provence and took up drawing Alpine landscapes.

  4. 1967

    Divorce from Ratna Mohini after thirty years

    In 1967 he divorced his first wife of thirty years, the Javanese dancer Ratna Mohini (known as “Elie”).

  5. 1968

    Turning away from photography, back to drawing

    In 1968 he began to turn away from photography and return to his passion for drawing and painting; he admitted that perhaps he had said all he could through photography.
