Meanwhile, in the life of Berthe Morisot
The whole life1875–1885
Oil, watercolour and pastel at once
Grown more confident in oil, Morisot, like Degas, works in oil, watercolour and pastel at the same time. She paints very quickly but prepares with countless studies, so that she can paint “a mouth, eyes, and a nose with a single brushstroke”.
1877
“The one real Impressionist” of the group
In 1877 the critic of Le Temps calls Morisot the “one real Impressionist in this group”.

The one exhibition she misses, because of her daughter
Morisot exhibits with the Impressionists from 1874 onwards, missing only the exhibition of 1879, when her daughter Julie is born.

The reviews rank her among the best
By the exhibition of 1880 opinion of Morisot has shifted: many reviews rank her among the best exhibitors, even Albert Wolff of Le Figaro, who had once mocked the group.

Unprimed canvas and a looser manner
Around 1880 Morisot begins painting on unprimed canvas — a technique with which Édouard Manet and Eva Gonzalès were also experimenting at the time — and her brushwork becomes looser.
