About the work

This is a preparatory watercolour study for a painting, 'The Antiquary's Cell', commissioned directly from the artist by John Sheepshanks. The painting shows the interior of Sheepshanks's own study at Barnes near Putney. In preparation for the painting, Cooke visited various antiques dealers in London's Wardour Street and numerous curiosity shops in order to make up a convincing assemblage of antiques and botanical and zoological specimens. Sheepshanks collected eleven paintings by Cooke, as well as a number of preparatory watercolour studies.
