The whole life1818
Returns to the United States, to Cambridge
Returns to the United States and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for twenty-five years. His nephews, the artists George Whiting Flagg and Jared Bradley Flagg, studied painting under him.
1820–1830s
Engravings after his paintings in gift annuals
Four of his paintings, among them “Moonlight” and “The Mother and Child” (the latter he counted among his best works), are engraved and published in the annual gift books The Atlantic Souvenir and The Token.
1826
Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Is elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
1827
First American exhibition, at the Boston Athenæum
Twelve of his paintings are shown at the Boston Athenæum, the first American exhibition of his work. He also exhibits five paintings at the National Academy of Design.
1830
Second marriage, to Martha Remington Dana
Marries Martha Remington Dana, daughter of Chief Justice Francis Dana, sister of the novelist Richard Henry Dana Sr. and a cousin of his first wife.
