About the work

Intrigued by the idea of pushing the meaning of a word to its visual and conceptual limits, artist Mel Bochner began his Strong Language series with thesaurus entries for six words he found particularly powerful. Taking these “strong” words, along with their synonyms, as initial designs, Bochner proceeded to subject them to nearly every printmaking technique possible on a copperplate—a process that the artist described as “contributing a voice to the words.” Amplified by his color choices, these techniques alternately disguise and accentuate the text, giving each word a distinct personality that confronts the meaning it conventionally holds.
