About the work
At the end of a city street is a lean-to stall and stallholder; in front of him is a group of four gamblers. From the right two Macanese women approach, followed by a servant who holds a parasol above. Pigs graze on the left; pot plants are ranged along the parapets of the adjacent buildings. The pencil shading in much of the composition suggests a low sun.
