He wins the Grand Prize for painting at the São Paulo Biennial, four years after the Grand Prize for a series of etchings.

Trouble with his eyesight
In one of his rare interviews he says that, because of serious problems with his eyesight, he now paints only four or five pictures a year.
1959
A house at Grizzana
He builds a house at Grizzana, 30 kilometres from Bologna, where he spends the summers with his sisters in his last years too. The fame that came after the war does not change his modest way of life: he remains unmarried and lives with his unmarried sisters in the old-fashioned family flat in Bologna, where one room serves as his studio and bedroom.
