A Painting in Two Hours Astonishes Augustus the Strong
The eighteen-year-old Dietrich managed to paint a picture in two hours that so astonished Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, that he instructed his minister Count Brühl to see to the artist's further training.

Dietrich is known to have been in the Netherlands from 1734, studying the masters of the previous century.
1741
Court Painter to Augustus III
Dietrich was appointed court painter to Augustus III, Elector of Saxony, in Dresden, with an annual salary of 400 thalers on condition that he supply four cabinet paintings a year.
1743–1744
Journey to Italy: Venice and Rome
In 1743 Dietrich set out for Italy — first Venice, then Rome — signing his works "Dietricij"; Italian art did not appeal to him, and the following year homesickness brought him back to Dresden.
1765
Professor at the Dresden Academy of Arts
In 1765 Dietrich became a professor at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts; the best known of his pupils is the landscape painter Johann Christian Klengel.
