About the work

In the museum's own words — in Dutch

Het beeld van Zeus bevond zich binnen in de Dorische tempel van Olympia, op de Griekse Peloponnesus. Het werd omstreeks 433 v. Chr. gemaakt door de Atheense beeldhouwer Phidias. Rechts van de tempel een beeld van Hercules. Op de trappen voor de tempel mensen die het beeld van Zeus aanbidden. Op de voorgrond rechts Olympische worstelaars en renners, links wordt een van de winnaars gelauwerd. Onder de voorstelling een vers in het Latijn.
