About the sculpture

This bust has been cut down from a full-length figure of St John the Evanglist; this would originally have stood to the right of the Cross in a Crucifixion group, with the Virgin on the left. It may be compared to a similar figure of St John, attributed to Nikolaus Gerhaerts, which forms part of a Crucifixion group in the church of St George in Nördlingen.
