He became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Leiden.
1515
Marriage to Elisabeth van Boschuysen
He married Elisabeth van Boschuysen of a patrician Leiden family; her father Jacob had been burgomaster and sheriff. The marriage remained childless.

Meeting Dürer in Antwerp
During Dürer's Netherlandish journey the two artists met in Antwerp between 8 and 21 June 1521; they exchanged prints, and on this occasion Dürer drew a portrait of Lucas van Leyden.

Meeting Jan Gossaert in Middelburg
He visited Middelburg, where he met Jan Gossaert; together they traveled through Flanders and Brabant, visiting Mechelen and Ghent.
1531–1533
Tuberculosis and the End of His Painting
In the last two years of his life he painted no pictures; he died in the summer of 1533 after a prolonged illness with tuberculosis.
