Prix de Rome
1876
A second attempt at the Prix de Rome fails
With “Priam at the Feet of Achilles” (now in Lille) Bastien-Lepage again misses the Prix de Rome: a year earlier he had taken second place in the competition with “Angels Appearing to the Shepherds”, later shown again at the 1878 Exposition Universelle. The failure leads him to resolve to return to country life.

“My Parents” and a portrait of Lady L. at the Salon of 1877
For the Salon of 1877 Bastien-Lepage sends “My Parents” and a full-length portrait of Lady L.
1879
Commissioned to portray the Prince of Wales
Growing fame brings Bastien-Lepage prominent commissions: in 1879 he is asked to paint the Prince of Wales. A small portrait of the prince is shown at the Royal Academy in 1880.
