In the life of Käthe Kollwitz

The whole life
  1. 1919–1925

Destroys the first monument and begins again

In 1919 she destroyed the monument to her son, and in 1925 she began again.

  2. until 1926

Turns to the woodcut after Barlach

While working on the Liebknecht sheet she found etching insufficient for monumental ideas. After seeing Ernst Barlach’s woodcuts at the Secession exhibitions she finished the sheet in the new medium and by 1926 had made about thirty woodcuts.

  3. 1927

    A trip to Moscow

In 1927 she visited Moscow; three years earlier her work had already been shown there at the “First General Exhibition of German Art”.

  4. 1928

Director of the graphic arts master class at the Prussian Academy

In 1928 she was named director of the Master Class for Graphic Arts at the Prussian Academy of Arts; the title was soon stripped after the Nazi regime rose to power.
