Marriage to Mette-Sophie Gad
In 1873 Gauguin married the young Danish woman Mette-Sophie Gad; the marriage produced five children — Émile (1874), Aline (1877), Clovis (1879), Jean-René (1881), and Paul (1883).

Meeting Camille Pissarro
Gauguin met Pissarro before 1874, and from 1878 their relationship became a friendship; he spent the summer of 1879 with Pissarro at Pontoise. Pissarro introduced Gauguin to Edgar Degas, who supported him by buying his paintings.
