About the sculpture

This statuette is made by a sculptor from the Marches area in Italy in the second half of the fifteenth century.

The figure seems to have been produced in the same workshop as a terracotta statuette of the Virgin and Child in the former Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin. It is likely that the present figure also represents the Virgin. Neither the left hand nor the right hand holding a book is original.
