About the sculpture
This work was submitted by invitation to an exhibition celebrating the 80th anniversary of the international Faenza Prize for contemporary ceramic art. Its powerful dynamism derives from Michikawa Shōzō’s unique forming method. After slicing and gouging into a solid block of clay placed on a wheel, he opens it from the centre and works the clay outwards as he spins the wheel. This causes the walls to split from the outside and turn into a series of fins.
