About the work

In the museum's own words — in Dutch

De passie. In het midden zit Christus op een steenblok met de doornenkroon op het hoofd en de handen gebonden. Onder deze voorstelling het attribuut van de Messias: de pelikaan die zijn jongen uit zijn eigen borst te eten geeft. Christus is door zeven voorstellingen omgeven, waarvan zes uit het passieverhaal. Aan de linkerkant, van onder naar boven: de besnijdenis van Christus, Christus biddend op de Olijfberg, de geseling van Christus. Aan de rechterkant, van boven naar onder: Christus voor Herodes, de naakte Christus op Golgota, Christus genageld aan het kruis. De voorstelling bovenaan in het midden stelt Christus zijn kruisdood voor. Links en rechts van deze scènes nog twee voorstellingen in cartouches: rechts de aankondiging van de Messias door Johannes de Doper en links God die zich openbaart aan Job. De drie theologische deugden zitten links (Geloof), rechts (Hoop) en boven (Liefde). In het midden en onderaan een cartouche met een Latijnse tekst.
