  1. 1796–1799

    Inspector of reviews with Bonaparte's army

    After the painting of the Pont d'Arcole Bonaparte gives Gros the post of inspecteur aux revues, which lets him follow the army; he spends several years with it.

  2. 1799–1801

    Return from Italy to Paris

    After several years with Napoleon's army Gros leaves Genoa in 1799 and makes his way to Paris; at the beginning of 1801 he takes up quarters in the Capucins.
