Природа Крыма с первых дней взбудоражила Левитана. «Чувствую себя превосходно, как давно не чувствовал, и работается хорошо (уже написал семь этюдов и очень милых), и если так будет работаться, то привезу целую выставку», – писал художник близкому другу А.П. Чехову в конце марта 1886 года. Месяц спустя, будучи подвержен перепадам настроения, он уже сетовал на «ужасную скуку» и за новыми впечатлениями отправился из Ялты в Алупку.

Работа в Крыму на пленэре оказала большое влияние на живописную манеру художника. Под ярким южным солнцем осветлилась палитра, краски стали чище и ярче. Во многом это случилось благодаря учителю В.Д. Поленову, в начале 1880-х годов поразившему молодых живописцев большой серией этюдов, привезенной из путешествия в Палестину и Египет. Один из самых солнечных крымских этюдов написан Левитаном в окрестностях Алупки. В простом традиционном жилище –татарской сакле из глины и серого известняка – художник увидел «поленовскую» светоносность чистых и открытых цветов. Сочетание голубых и охристых тонов, синевато-лиловых теней создает живописный контраст, выталкивающий «жар солнца» на поверхность небольшого холста. Этюд написан легко и прозрачно, чистота цвета достигает особой силы звучания.

За два с половиной месяца путешествия художнику действительно удалось составить небольшую выставку, в Москву он привез около 60 работ. В 1886 году крымские этюды экспонировались на VI Периодической выставке Московского общества любителей художеств. Почти все произведения были распроданы, два из них – «Сакля в Алупке» и «Улица в Ялте» (1886, Третьяковская галерея) приобрел П.М. Третьяков.

  1. spring 1884

    He takes part in a Peredvizhniki exhibition

    In the spring of 1884 he takes part in the travelling exhibition of the Peredvizhniki; he will become a member of their Association in 1891.

  2. mid-1880s

    His heart disease sharply worsens

    Levitan's material situation improves in the mid-1880s, but a hungry childhood, an unsettled life and hard work tell on his health: his heart disease sharply worsens.

  3. spring 1885

    He graduates without the title of artist

    In spring 1885, at twenty-four, he graduates from the school but does not receive the title of artist: he is given a diploma as a teacher of penmanship. He has no money.

  4. April 1885

    He settles at Maximovka and meets Chekhov

    In April 1885 he settles in the remote village of Maximovka near Babkino, where the Chekhovs are staying at the Kiselyov estate; his acquaintance with Anton Pavlovich Chekhov begins a friendship and rivalry that will last all his life.

  5. 1886

    The Crimea and an exhibition of fifty landscapes

    A trip to the Crimea in 1886 restores his strength; on his return Levitan organises an exhibition of fifty of his landscapes.

  6. spring 1888

    He discovers Plyos on the Volga

    In spring 1888 he sails by steamer along the Oka to Nizhny Novgorod and on up the Volga with the artist Alexei Stepanov and Sofia Kuvshinnikova; to their own surprise they discover the small, quiet town of Plyos and decide to stay on for a while. The three summer seasons there (1888–1890) prove extremely productive: some two hundred works bring Levitan wide fame.
