About the work

Marion Dorn was a prolific designer of carpets and textiles, using Modernist abstract motifs. Working in London during the 1930s with her husband, the avant-garde artist and designer Edward McKnight Kauffer, Dorn was the best known carpet designer in Britain. She led the field in developing high quality carpets, emulating the French luxury market but with new Modern designs.

Her trademark style was the cream-on-cream carpet with a geometric relief in the weave, as used in Syrie Maugham's famous all-white room of 1933. However, like many designers, Dorn also produced designs in traditional styles, as companies like Wilton's supplied for both the modern and traditional market tastes.
