Происхождение иконы не установлено, однако стиль письма позволяет не сомневаться, что оно московское. Создавший образ мастер следует заветам знаменитой школы Оружейной палаты. Сохраняя традиционную иконографическую схему, он насыщает ее барочными деталями. Это касается и пышных складок прописанных золотом одежд, и конструкции ложа святой Анны на витых золотых ножках, и балдахина над ней, и драгоценного сосуда на блюде рядом с ложем, и приготовленной для младенца купели на высокой ножке, и кресла, на котором восседает Иоаким.
