Algernon Newton's reputation rests chiefly on his eerily deserted London cityscapes; rural subject matter such as this drawing represents a departure for him. Despite this, he was an enthusiastic contributor to the Recording Britain project, with eight drawings of sites in Suffolk. Waterways were a common feature in Newton's work, and this drawing of a bend in the River Brett is no exception. The bare trees indicate a winter scene, the chill heightened by touches of white and the blue paper.
