Anverso: Tipos leoneses Tres estudios de figuras, independientes. A la izquierda, figura masculina de pie, de perfil a la izquierda. Está representado desde un punto de vista alto. Lleva chaqueta y sombrero de copa plana a la cabeza. Con las manos en los bolsillos del pantalón, parece estar fumando un cigarrillo. En el centro de la hoja, otra figura masculina de perfil a la derecha. Está representado sólo de medio cuerpo y desde un punto de vista alto. A la cabeza sombrero flexible de copa redondeada. La última figura, a la derecha, es de una mujer de cuerpo entero de perfil a la izquierda. Lleva pañuelo recogiéndole el cabello a la cabeza, y sobre el hombro izquierdo unas alforjas. Entre las manos, un pollo. Reverso: Rasguños En la zona inferior izquierda, un círculo sin cerrar con otro en su interior, de mucho menor diámetro. En la zona superior derecha, lo que podría ser una pequeña cabeza de perfil a la izquierda.

The whole life1900
Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
